Daily Wrap 05/31/07

Summary:
Up 0.7% today.  A large part of that was due to a newsless 10% rise in MLKKF and general metal strength.  On the downside XSI dropped 3%.
I was in a buying mood today, adding back OCNF, buying more TRA, and starting a position in ESEA.  The latter is another dry bulk shipping company which [...]

Daily Wrap 05/30/07

Summary:
Flat on the day.  The S&P hit a new high as markets ignored a 6.5% drop in Shanghai.  Why the quiescence?  Perhaps because the cause of the fall, the raising of a transaction fee by Chinese authorities, was more clear, or perhaps because the last Shanghai drop didn’t have any longer-term effects.  Markets were also cheered [...]

Daily Wrap 05/29/07

Summary:
Up 0.6% today.  Most of that was actually from yesterday when the US market was closed but Toronto was open.  Got help from the usual suspects.  XSI fell 2% today after being down 7% most of the day.  Still well up from its 15% gain on Friday, but the amounts moving the stock are [...]

Daily Wrap 05/25/07

Summary:
Had a resounding comeback of 2.4% today.  Of that, 1.9% was from XSI, which rocketed 15%.  I’m hoping this means someone knows something good about the company, but its impossible to tell.  With volume of 43K, this move was actuated by less than $85K, so I’m not counting on these gains to last just yet.  [...]

Daily Wrap 05/24/07

Summary:
Was thumped -1.4% today. XSI was my only green (long) position today.  Tankers were especially weak and I sold all of them except for SEA and NM , which I picked up in its secondary.  My reason for cutting was a drop in the Baltic Dry Index, a measure of dry bulk tanker rates.  This [...]

Daily Wrap 05/23/07

Summary:
Up 0.5% today. ALSWF again drove results, though this time with some help from miners.
I did several trades. I sold some ONAV and DSX in my IRA. I am wary of a correction after a big run up. I will rebuy on weakness.
During the morining, I tried to close some of [...]

Daily Wrap 05/22/07

Summary:
Up 1.0% today.  Most of that was due to ALSWF which jumped 6.5% on an announcement that Toshiba will be embedding their laptop security product.
I shorted some YHOO .  Their valuation is stretched and they seem to be struggling competitively.
Positions:
Long: JEQ AUY SLW NTO NXG HBMFF ALSWF JAGNF FFHL EGLE AOB XSI NTLRF NLY MDN.TO [...]

Daily Wrap 05/21/07

Summary:
Up 0.7% today. With the Toronto market closed, much of the gain came from tanker companies. AMZN continues to levitate, rising 5%. I’m glad I kept my short exposure small. I expect the momentum to continue. I should probably cover and agree with my future self to re-short in a [...]

Daily Wrap 05/18/07

Summary:
Up 0.5% today to end my first down week in a while. Miners and ALSWF rose. Again NM caused me regret, as it jumped a further 9% despite the fact that it will issue 11.5 million shares on Tuesday (this will increase shares outstanding by 19%). I may try to get [...]

Daily Wrap 05/17/07

Summary:
Down 0.3% today and approaching 2% for the week. XSI was the star of the day, rising 6.5% despite what I thought were lackluster earnings a couple of days ago.  But this wasn’t enough to overcome weakness in miners, ALSWF, and Japan.  NM, which I sold yesterday on news of a secondary, rose 5%.  Go [...]
