Summary:
Down 0.6% today. Miners were mixed with metals prices. Physical stocks of most industrial metals continued to fall, however, and these will not be helped by a strike in Peru.
I added more MLKKF and sold some EGLE. Dry-bulk fundamentals continue to be strong, but some of the other dry bulkers may offer value. Or [...]
Summary:
Gained 0.4% today. FFHL rose 6% on no news. Miners did well as both precious and base metal prices rose. Physical copper stocks are falling again. BKC rose on good earnings. I may rethink my short.
I added more MLKKF and am approaching my 10% of portfolio target. I also [...]
Summary:
Flat on the day. No huge moves, but shippers did well, and HBI fell almost 5% on bad earnings. Company execs say the restructuring in on track, but I’m sticking with my short. Added a couple more slugs of XSI today.

Summary:
Up 1.6% today. Much of this due to my large position in ALSWF, but most everything did well on a day the Dow broke 13,000 for the first time. Fueling the rally: M&A, good earnings, and a good durable goods number.
Shippers of all varieties continue to be among my top performers. I [...]
Summary:
Up 0.1% on a day when miners mainly fell and nothing did anything too crazy. Added still more XSI. If prices stay down I will probably go above my 10% of portfolio target then sell off those shares when the stock moves up (assuming it moves up).
I trimmed a little SLW hoping to [...]
Summary:
Gave back 0.6% today. Most of this was due to a 6.5% drop in XSI. This is good as I want to buy more. On the plus side, tankers such as ONAV and EGLE, were up.
Added to my GCI short. Nothing in their earnings release leads me to believe anything [...]
Summary:
See-saw week ended with a 1.22% gain today, almost recovering what I lost yesterday. Most everything was up, with SLW gaining 6%. You may remember I sold some yesterday out of caution. Didn’t work out, but I think it was the prudent thing to do in view of falling silver prices. These rebounded somewhat today [...]
Summary:
Took a 1.4% knock today. As in February, trouble began in China, where heady growth numbers raised concerns that Chinese authorities will tighten monetary policy. Shanghai fell 4%, but unlike it February, the US markets largely yawned and ended the day flat. Metals prices fell, however, and this hit my mining positions.
I [...]
Summary:
Up 0.5% for the day. Sister in town so little market time. Bought some more MLKKF after it jumped 8%. I had an order in yesterday which didn’t get executed and regret not having raised my bid the extra few cents which would have got this done.
Positions:
Long: JEQ JSC AUY SLW NTO NXG HBMFF ALSWF [...]
2006 Recovery (my trading history Pt. 10)
0 Comments Published April 18th, 2007 in Commentary, Trading HistoryAs noted, I began 2006 with a portfolio very different from that of the beginning of 2005. I had 20% invested in Asian funds and about 60% in resources stocks, particularly metal mining companies and energy producers. I also had 10% in Ship Finance Limited (SFL), a lessor of oil tankers, and 10% in cash. [...]
